Question #1:

Is this bar spacing appropriate for a budgie?

So i've been searching craigslist for around a couple months now and think i have found the perfect cage. It provides plenty of space for the parakeet/budgie i'm getting soon. Its really nice, especially for the price. The only issue is the bar spacing, which happens to be 3/4 inch and more than recommended. Its quite frustrating that this near perfect cage has this tiny yet important flaw. So i was wondering if this would matter too much? Also, would getting an english budgie make much of a difference?

Question #2:

My budgie is grooming me?

Mi Vida, my 2 month old male English Budgie is nibbling on the dead skin on my finger tips. As he nibbles, he appears to be grooming me, however he often catches my finger in a chomp. I really don't think that he is being aggressive. But if this is a bad habit, I would like to nip it in the bud.

Question #3:

How do I make a play gym for my English budgie?

I am going to make a play gym for my English budgie for my b-day with my Grandpa. I would like to know, (since English are bigger) if I need to make anything bigger. I also have a normal sized budgie. How can a make a VERY good play gym for my birds?

Question #4:

What should I name my Budgie?

My English budgie is two months old. He has a zebra striped back, wings and head. Where it is not striped the feathers are a blue that resembles slate, or a stormy sky. He has a wonderful character and I am training him to sing country music.

The song he is learning right now is Country Boy by Alan Jackson
but I also plan to teach him Brooks and Dunn, Rodney Atkins, Tim Mcgraw and Brad Paisley

I would like a country themed name for him, and yes, I have considered Hank Jr.

Question #5:

Are english budgies twice the size of normal budgies?

i went to the pet store to buy another budgie
and i saw 2 english budgies
the size of a young conure
and i was amazed how big they were
it was 2 of them

but i seached them on youtube and they were same size of a normal budgie

so is the pet shop one special?
it also has a ring on the leg so its from some breeder
PS : stop rating others down for no reason first two answers!

Question #6:

What is the difference between an "English" and an "American" budgie?

Question #7:

How to hand rear budgies (advice on what formula to use, how to set up brooder, age to take from nest, etc)?

Hey there!

I am a fairly experienced budgie owner and breeder. However, I have never hand reared a chick, though I have been really interested in doing it for years, I just didn't want to do it when I was worried I might not have enough time to do it. Now I do, and I'd love to take one or two chicks if the English budgies I have sitting in eggs bring them out to hand rear.

Anyway, I need a good guide to do it. I do already have an idea and have researched it, but I want to make sure I am doing everything right and get some questions answered.

1. What age do you advise to take the chicks from their parents? I've seen differing opinions. Is about 2-3 weeks the right idea?

2. What is a good formula to use that is accessible in Victoria, Australia? If I have to go out of my way to get Roudybush or Kaytee, which seem to be adviced often, I will, but I am having trouble finding any in my area or on Australian eBay. If you know of any that will keep the chicks healthy and are available in Australia, I'd love to hear of them. Is Avione an okay formula? It's around a lot, but I can't find much feedback on it.

3. I'll be setting up a 'brooder' myself. I have a small 5W heat mat (is that okay? I really don't know about watts), thermostat and hydrometer. How big should the brooder be? If you could give me a range in cm that would be great. Will a plastic container do fine? For bedding, am I correct in thinking that newspaper and paper towel is all that is needed?

4. Any extra information or links to good guides to hand rearing would be very appreciated.

Thank you!

Question #8:

my male budgie has an overgrown beak that looks woody and twisted any ideas what is wrong?

he is an English budgie and his beak always looked woody ever since i was given him, now it is overgrown. Is the woody appearance normal?

Question #9:

No such thing as a domesticated bird?

I'm a budgie owner, and I was looking at some articles about birds when I came across one from National Bird Day in 2008. Apparently it's a holiday designed to bring attention to the exploitation of other countries' birds by the US pet industry. I do understand that happens, but the entire premise of the article can be summed up in these few lines:

"Whether captive bred or wild caught, birds are not domesticated animals. Domestic animals are animals that have been bred for hundreds of years to live in the care of humans and are distinct from their wild ancestors. Birds commonly kept as pets are no different than their wild relatives—they are the native species of other countries."

I find it somewhat ridiculous to say that there is no such thing as a domesticated pet bird. I would never say that a large bird such as a cockatoo or a macaw is domesticated - they aren't. But budgerigars, for example, have been kept as pets for centuries. All the different color variations of budgerigars have risen from captive breeding. And think of the English budgie, which is also captive bred. What about other kinds of birds, such as carrier pigeons. Aren't those domesticated?

What are your thoughts on this? Is there a such thing as a domesticated bird?
Well, that's true. There's not much in the behavior of birds that we've changed over the years.

But we've certainly changed their looks. Their colorations in many cases. In the case of the budgerigar (and I keep coming back to budgies because I have the most experience with them :) ), the English budgie is certainly different from it's wild cousins. Their build is different. They are larger with more feathering on their head. They are tend to be gentler in temperament.

So even if their behaviors haven't really been bred out, wouldn't the size, build, and coloring differences count towards domestication?
By the way, here is the link to the article I was reading: Click Here
Even domesticated animals will become feral without human interaction. But it's true, the bird as a pet has not undergone an extremely radical change to suit human needs...

These answers are really interesting.

Question #15:

What are good talking tools for parrots?

I am looking for more tools, for my male Cockatiel Kiki. I got my English budgie, Binkie to talk, which was fairly easy. Now I am working on Kiki. I was wondering what kind of tools were out there, and I am also trying to find a name for a repeater product. It's a shape of a bird that records your voice when the bird plays with it or bumps it, the plastic bird talks. I don't know the name of it. Looking for stuff like that and really good CDs. And some birdy advise for for teaching beginner birds.

Question #16:

Question #17:

I Miss My Bird..:-( Help..?

I got my bird 3 years ago on valentine's day. It was a gift from my mom. He was an english budgie. He brightened up my day so much. We live in apartments and been living here for a while. They recently changed the lease out of no where and had to get rid of all of our pets.. INCLUDING birds and fish. I went up to the office to see if we could at least get 30 days so we could move and they said no..IMMEDIATELY...We gave him to my driving instructor and he has taken such good care of him. I checked every single day for a new place. I didn't give up.. My bird dances and whistles and sings..he makes me laugh..and he loves his neck being scratched..Last week I went to see him and he was so happy..i didn't move from my side of the cage.. He just wanted to go home..On monday, he passed away.. I didn't find out until today because my driving instructor didn't want me to be so distracted since this is finals week..I just broke down and cried..as I type this, I cry..I just don't know how to cope..He would tell me he loves me...He called my mom granny.. And his name is Chinko..which was his favorite word..Chinko and granny..I miss him..how do I cope? A lot of people think Im crazy for crying over a bird but he wasn't a BIRD..he was a part of our family..I've been trying to look up and see if animals go to heaven. I would love to see my bird there..but everything I've found is negative..Please give me words of encouragement..please.
Ava- Im so sorry to hear about Cuddles. There is no doubt in my mind that a year from now, when someone mentions Chinko, I wont burst into tears.. I cried all night and practically cried myself to sleep. My Chinko was a pretty blue(sometimes he looked purple) and white..with a few black markings on his face. I guess what makes it so hard for us to deal with it is the memories..Thinking about the good times and knowing that we will never have them back.. They live forever in our hearts. <3
